Making PS3 Controller Wall Holder

UPDATE: This post is now considered old. Please head over to the newer version with more detailed photos & instructions here.

I have been doing some spring cleaning recently and noticed that I always had two things lying about on my desk, my Playstation 3 controllers. Now I’m always dropping stuff and knocking things off my desk so I thought of this simple little contraption to hold my PS3 controllers on my wall out of the way.

First you need some Tool Clips, the ones I used are 28/29mm. If you have never seen them they are used for holding pipes on to a wall. Here’s a picture of them to show you:

Take your PS3 controller and pull open the clips gently with your hands until you can slide the handles of the controller into them, they should be a snug fit. Take a pair of pliers and snap off the hooked ends of the clips and then file down the sharp edges. Paint them with enamel paint if you want, two coats should do.

To fix them to the wall you will need some rawlplugs, screws & you might need a drill. If you are hanging on a plasterboard wall and you can find a joist to screw into then you might need to counter sink the hole before you put the screws/rawlplugs in. If the wall doesn’t have a joist where you need one then use a screwdriver the size of the rawlplug to go through the plasterboard and use some plasterboard rawlplugs. If the wall is brick you will need to use the drill and again some rawlplugs and screws.

You need to remember when putting them on the wall to put your controller in them and hold it against the wall. Take the controller out and mark the positions through the fixing holes on the wall. You’ll probably need some help to do that bit though.

After you have fixed them to the wall the stress of the screw in the fixing makes the rings tighten so you will need to get your controller and stretch out the rings to fit again. After that put your controllers in their holders & marvel at your wonderful creation. :)

The finished holder with controller in.

An empty holder.

EDIT: Shocks has come up with a great idea. If you cut another clip in half you can add a one in the center of the controller to stop it falling forward. It can be really helpful for keeping your controllers in the holders if your walls aren’t straight.

EDIT 2: There seems to be a lot of people on different sites who seem to have gotten the wrong idea about this and think that I think everyone should do this and that it’s a great idea. Well to be honest it was just a brainwave I had on how to get my controllers out of the way. It is the best situation for me as my PS3 is directly underneath them and they are mounted on a little alcove wall which keeps them out of the way. I posted it here as I thought there may be a use others can find for it. If you don’t like my idea please keep your abusive comments to yourself. If you have some constructive criticism or you like the idea then please feel free to comment.

Dude at first I thought this was retarded, but honestly, that is pretty clever. Kudos to you broseph!

Shame you can’t charge them though, at least, without giant cables sticking out :<

  3. @Eddie: Thanks, lol. To be honest I didn’t think it going to work but it did, it’s also cheap to do too. :)

@Mc Fadge: My PS3 is right under the holders so I just run the USB cable up the wall when I charge them. I suppose you could get some sort of USB charger, dismantle it and find some way to attach it to the holders. I’m not an electrician so I don’t have a clue, but feel free to try and add something like that. ;)

Thanks for both your comments too. :)

  4. Excelent Dude!! I’ll try to do it.

  5. @Skatox: Glad you like it. :)

  6. cool!
    really nice idea.
    thx.

  7. Any change of getting a more detailed step-by-step description with photos for those of us less mechanically inclined? :)

  8. Hi Buds,

Sure I’ll see what I can do tomorrow. I’ve had to build a computer for my sister today so I haven’t had much time. ;)

@roy: Thanks. It’s nice to get good comments. ;)

hey i no i didnt come up with the idea but if you cut one of those clips in half and use it to keep the top of the controller pulled to the wall it also helps and stops them from pulling out!!!!

  10. Hey Shocks,

I’m always glad when people can improve on my ideas. If you have done it yourself, take a photo and I’ll add it to the post. ;)
